Biography
Professor Dr. M Kabir Hassan is a Professor of Finance in the Department of Economics and Finance at the University of New Orleans, where he has recently been named the Moffett Chair of World Resource Prices and Economic Development by the University of Louisiana System (UL System) Board of Regents. He holds four endowed Chairs at the University of New Orleans, including the Hibernia Professor of Economics and Finance, two Hancock Whitney Chair Professorships, and the Bank One Professor in Business.
Professor Hassan won the 2016 Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Prize in Islamic Banking and Finance. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar for 2022–2024 and serves the inaugural Hamid D. Habib Chair of Finance at the Institute of Business Administration, University of Karachi, Pakistan. He received his BA in Economics and Mathematics from Gustavus Adolphus College (Minnesota, USA) and his M.A. in Economics and Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He is a financial economist with consulting, research, and teaching experience in development finance, money and capital markets, Islamic finance, corporate finance, investments, monetary economics, macroeconomics, Islamic banking and finance, and international trade and finance. He has consulted for the World Bank, IMF, African Development Bank, Transparency International–Bangladesh, Islamic Development Bank, UNDP, Bangladesh Bank, the Central Bank of Saudi Arabia (formerly SAMA), the Government of Turkey, and many private organisations.
Professor Hassan has been elected a Board Member of the Ethics and Governance Committee and Education Board of AAOIFI for two terms (2000–2003 and 2024–2028) and currently serves as the Chair of the AAOIFI Education Board. He is an Advisory Council Member of the World Awqaf and Zakat Forum (WAZF), a member of the Oxford University Saïd Business School faith-based investing initiative, and serves on Christian Michelsen Institute (CMI) on Islamic finance in the Nordic/Scandinavian countries.
